What Will I Play?
Assignments and Repertoire:
Participants receive 2 assignments to be performed at classes throughout the week:
Excerpt(s) from one work within standard orchestral repertoire
Étude from either the Barret or Ferling method book
Campers are expected to prepare their assignments before coming to camp. See “Preparing your Assignment" for more information.
All assignments are sent via email, typically one month prior to the start of camp.
Applying as a soloist:
Returning campers may apply to perform a solo. Those selected will perform one movement of a work in place of one of the two assignments listed above.
If the piece requested has piano accompaniment, you will perform with the staff pianist in the masterclass. You must bring the piano part with you to camp. This will be collected at registration. Rehearsal times will be made available at camp and posted on the bulletin board.
What music should I bring?
Regardless of assignment, all campers should have the following music at JMOC:
Barret Oboe Method
Ferling Etudes
Printed out excerpts from the online database (for your assigned excerpt, we recommend obtaining the complete orchestral part)
Solo music being covered: bring whatever you own
Optional:
Solo music with accompaniment to read with our professional pianist
Chamber music to play with other campers (there will also be a box of chamber music available to sign out during the week)
Additional Information
Études are typically performed in morning masterclasses
Excerpts and solos are typically covered in evening classes
To provide more authentic audition preparation, two campers are assigned to each orchestral work and will perform back-to-back
All assignments are made according to a camper’s individual skill level
Returning campers will never be assigned a piece they have been assigned in past summers
